BMW eDrive Zone technology to be standard in all plug-in hybrid models in the BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series, as well as the X5

BMW Series 5

BMW Series 5

The BMW eDrive Zone function triggers an automatic switch to purely electric operating mode as soon as the vehicle enters selected urban areas such as urban low-emission zones.

The digital service uses geo-fencing technology via GPS to identify designated areas. eDrive zones of this kind are currently designated in some 80 cities throughout Europe. When the service is activated, each available eDrive Zone on the navigation map is graphically highlighted in the Control Display: a message appears to inform the driver that the vehicle will automatically switch to electric driving mode as soon as it enters an eDrive Zone.

2021 BMW iX3 EV surfaces on Instagram, without camouflage

An unannounced car driving on public streets, draped in camouflage, is a marketing scheme intended to attract attention. It’s not as cheap and offensive as twice smashing a side window with a large rock during is public launch, but many in the media are happy to play along as it generates interest and excitement and helps to sell magazines and ads.

This unannounced BMW iX3 EV is dressed in white, with blue accents. Classy.

On Instagram, two photos of the BMW iX3 have appeared that show the electric SUV in the series version without camouflage. The differences between these images and the study shown so far are minimal.

Looking back at the discontinued hybrid BMW i8

Alistair Charlton / Forbes »

The BMW i8 was not only the first BMW I even drove. It was also the first sports car, the first hybrid, the first to be constructed even partially from carbon fiber, and of course the first car with vertically-hinged doors I’d ever driven. Not only did all of that make for a pretty desirable recipe, but I was just 25 years old and it was only the second car I’d ever borrowed to review as a journalist.

Even if BMW’s quirky hybrid with a six-figure price tag and the three-cylinder engine from a Mini had been a total failure, it would for that list of personal firsts always be one to remember.
