Large, expensive, luxury electric pick-up trucks and SUVs will signal the arrival of the EV era in America, if they sell

Lawrence Ulrich, NY Times » (Paywall)

Say hello to G.M.’s 1,000-horsepower electric Hummer, that onetime green scourge, now rehabilitated to pass muster at any Silicon Valley cocktail party. Behold the beefy pickup trucks from Ford and Chevrolet, as well as upstarts like Rivian and Bollinger. Elon Musk at Tesla couldn’t resist upstaging rivals with the concept Cybertruck, a truck so Mad Max-macho that it makes a Hummer seem discreet.

Beyond the pickup realm, new electric models from Tesla, Audi, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Cadillac share a common trait: They’re all luxury S.U.V.s, with rich accommodations, potent acceleration and generous space for families.

Ford / Lincoln EV project with Rivian cancelled

Michael Martinez  / Automotive News »

Ford Motor Co. and Rivian are canceling their plan to jointly develop an electric vehicle for the Lincoln brand due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Lincoln informed its dealers of the decision on Tuesday. Officials said the brand still planned to have its own EV eventually and could potentially co-develop a product with Rivian in the future but shelved the project because of the “current environment.”

Greg Gardner / Forbes »

“Given the current environment, Lincoln and Rivian have decided not to pursue development of a fully electric vehicle based on Rivian’s skateboard platform.”

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to commit $10 billion to fund scientists, activists, nonprofits, and other groups fighting to protect the environment and counter the effects of climate change

On February 17th, 2020, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced over Instagram that he was donating US$10 billion to a new organization called Bezos Earth Fund to fight climate change. Bezos wrote »

Today, I’m thrilled to announce I am launching the Bezos Earth Fund.⁣⁣⁣
Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet. I want to work alongside others both to amplify known ways and to explore new ways of fighting the devastating impact of climate change on this planet we all share. This global initiative will fund scientists, activists, NGOs — any effort that offers a real possibility to help preserve and protect the natural world. We can save Earth. It’s going to take collective action from big companies, small companies, nation states, global organizations, and individuals. ⁣⁣⁣
I’m committing $10 billion to start and will begin issuing grants this summer. Earth is the one thing we all have in common — let’s protect it, together.⁣⁣⁣

The Bezos Earth Fund will begin issuing grants this summer as part of the initiative.

“It’s going to take collective action from big companies, small companies, nation states, global organizations, and individuals,” Bezos said.

Counteracting climate change has become a popular cause for U.S. billionaires in recent years, with Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg and hedge fund manager Tom Steyer counted among the world’s wealthiest environmental philanthropists. ⁣⁣⁣ Last year, Bezos pledged to make online retailer Amazon net carbon neutral by 2040 – the first major corporation to announce such a goal – and to buy 100,000 electric delivery vehicles from U.S. vehicle design and manufacturing startup Rivian Automotive LLC.

Rivian to build the first branded Lincoln EV

Kirsten Korosec, TechCrunch »

Lincoln, the luxury brand under Ford, said Wednesday the two companies will work together to develop an “all-new” electric vehicle. This electric vehicle, or at least the intent to build it, was announced in April as part of Ford’s $500 million investment in Rivian. But until now, it wasn’t clear what that vehicle would be and under what brand.

Rivian confirmed the announcement and didn’t provide further details.

Lincoln has produced two plug-in hybrid vehicles, the Aviator and Corsair Grand Touring, which it unveiled in November at the LA Auto Show. But it has never produced an all-electric vehicle.

Keith Naughton, Bloomberg »

Ford joined Amazon.com Inc. in backing suburban Detroit-based Rivian in April and had said it would use Rivian’s “skateboard” platform. The number of all-electric models in U.S. showrooms will surge to 121 five years from now, from 18 now, according to researcher LMC Automotive.
