Dodge and Kia named #1 in J.D. Power Initial Quality Study » Tesla is last, confirming the EV maker’s ongoing long documented quality problems

Note added June 26, 2020 » This should have been a good news story for both Kia and Dodge. Instead the media (including this site) is focused on Tesla’s terrible ranking.

J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study, now in its 34th year, examines problems experienced by purchasers and lessees of new 2020 model-year vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. According to J.D. Power, Initial Quality has proven to be an excellent predictor of long-term reliability, which has a significant impact on owner satisfaction and brand loyalty.

This is the first time a Detroit automaker topped the list in 34 years. The Dodge Durango and Dodge Challenger models both scored very high in their segments.

Kia tied Dodge and maintained its six-year streak as top-ranked auto brand.

Tesla, which outdid perennially bottom-ranked Land Rover, has traditionally refused to cooperate with outside researchers like J.D. Power. Perhaps we now understand more the reasons for this.

The J.D. Power IQS results vindicate the many reports from owners, journalists, and analysts concerning Tesla’s persistent production quality issues. J.D. Power is well respected in the industry.

While Tesla has focused on being first to market, the short term, it has created long-term problems. The company has a long documented history of severe quality issues. (CNBC » Build fast, fix later: Speed hurts quality at Tesla, some workers say)

That mindset doesn’t appear to have changed as the newest Model Y is experiencing many of the same difficulties and widespread defects that have afflicted earlier models.

Hype and being first to market has proven profitable for Elon Musk and shareholders, and they have built up a fan base. However, if Tesla does not improve quality, they will not be able to grow their base into paying customers at a time when other manufacturers with much better reputations for quality products are rapidly bring EVs to market.

Tesla is not about to go the way of Edsel any time soon. But just as there will always be a market of Land Rover, there will always be a fans of Tesla.

Paul A. Eisenstein / The Detroit Bureau »

The Dodge brand, long a quality laggard, surged to take the top spot in the 2020 Power IQS, tying Kia, while toppling traditional benchmarks including Korea’s Genesis, Japan’s Lexus and Germany’s Porsche.

If anything, Porsche plunged to the lower quartile in the latest quality study, while Lexus and Genesis also slid sharply down the list. But no one fared more poorly than Tesla. Covered for the first time in the IQS, the California EV maker was, by far, posted an industry-worst score, underscoring recent reports of endemic quality issues impacting its line-up and, in particular, the new Model Y battery-SUV.

Mercedes-Benz EV charging service now integrated with BP Chargemaster’s Polar network

Mercedes-Benz UK »

Mercedes-Benz EQC customers now can enjoy integrated access to the UK’s largest public electric vehicle charging network. Polar, operated by BP Chargemaster, is now available along with other charging networks, through one optional subscription, via Mercedes me Charge.

A three-year subscription to Mercedes me Charge comes as standard with the EQC, and due to the unique cooperation between Mercedes-Benz Cars UK and BP Chargemaster, Mercedes me Charge customers in the UK can upgrade their basic plan to have access to a Polar Plus membership (6 months subscription free). This membership provides the driver with a lower cost electricity tariff than on the basic option.

This gives British customers access to the network on a single subscription. BP Chargemaster will also install private and business charging points for Mercedes customers.

BP Chargemaster will install home charging wall boxes, workplace charge points for fleets and businesses and charging infrastructure at Mercedes-Benz retail sites. This includes Smart home charge units, which allows customers to take advantage of dynamic energy tariffs. Both were covered during charging (also the dashboard) and then uncovered right before departure.

The EQS looks pretty good (although still in camouflage) and as an electric EQ equivalent of S-Class, might be the most direct Tesla Model S competitor up to date.

Mercedes-Benz AG is investing more than 1 billion euros in a global battery production network

The battery production network will consist of nine factories at seven locations on three continents.

Plants at Kamenz (Germany), Bangkok (Thailand) and Beijing (China) are already online. The next location to soon start battery production will be Jawor (Poland), followed by plants around Stuttgart (Germany), and Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

A Kamenz plant has been producing batteries since 2012.

Together with its local partner Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant (TAAP), Mercedes-Benz Cars has set up a battery production facility in Bangkok (Thailand), which started operations in 2019. Mercedes-Benz and BAIC have jointly set up a local battery production facility at the existing plant location in the Yizhuang Industrial Park in Beijing (China). Production at a battery factory in Jawor, Poland, will start in 2020. At the Mercedes-Benz plant in Untertürkheim, Germany, battery factories are currently being built at the Brühl and Hedelfingen locations. A battery factory is also currently being built near the existing Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, USA. A new battery factory will also be built at the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen plant.
